We can infer from the human evolution that dynamic balance of matter and energy is the basic need of all the life processes. Rather, life originates and energy evolves on the path of a well-directed progress under conditions of dynamic balance. Vastu considers the south, west and southwest direction as evil directions essentially because of the observed energy imbalances and stress conditions in these zones. Vastu aims at creating harmonious condition suitable for dynamically balanced functioning of the human mind and body, through dwellings which are in the harmony with nature, the cosmos and the natural forces and energy fields. Vastu recommends that maximum space should be left open towards north and the east directions and that the Vastu should be aligned in the south and the west zones. Provision of more space in the north and the east directions ensures that the entire household is exposed to health-preserving energy of clear morning sun for the maximum possible duration. Maximum openings to the east and north maintain and shower bliss on the whole house. Absence of openings to the south and the southwest cross-ventilates positive energy from the east to the north, and like a circular flow, from the north to the east. For a house with minimum side margins to the south and the west on the rear side, effectively blocks any Pingla nadi current and adds all good effects of Ida nadi by maintaining flow in the north and the east directions only. To achieve the dynamic stability by equalizing gravitational forces, magnetic flux effect and to attain environmental purity and a sense of cosmic reality, the major load of the house should be aligned to the south and the west zones of the plot. In Vastu the type of soil essential for selecting a plot and building a house should be white, yellow or at least red in color. The taste recommended is sweet, or at the most, slightly salty. White and yellow soils have natural pest-controlling qualities due to the presence of minerals like calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, etc. water-logging possibility in these soils is characteristically low, offering natural plinth protection. Due to white and yellow colors, the soil has good insulating properties, reducing direct penetration of solar energy, resulting in benign environment around the house. Additionally, because of better bearing capacities for foundation of these soils, the construction proves to be economical. After analyzing the Vastu tenets and principles, some ground rules can be formulated for deriving optimum benefits from Vastu science at the planning stage itself. 1. The north-south axis should be longer than the east-west axis. 2. The major part of the Vastu construction should be located in the southwest zone of the plot and open spaces should be provided in the northeast direction. 3. Underground water tanks should be planned in the north and northeast direction. 4. Ground terrain should have gradual slopes towards the north and the east directions. 5. Lumber-room, storage room, any go down should be located in the southwest corner. 6. Excavation should commence from the northeast side and move in a clockwise direction towards the southeast side and then onto the southwest direction. Activities like providing a footing for the structure and ground-filling must begin in the southwest. 7. To avoid any ill-effects of the neighboring Vastu and its domain, it is advisable to complete the construction of the entire compound wall before commencing any other construction activity. The south and the west side compounds should be of stone construction, solid and heavy, and with sufficient height. 8. Soil analysis should be carried out. The soil not having requisite characteristics as per the vast science should not be used for ground filling. 9. The south-side wall should not have any door or window openings. 10. Maximum possible number of doors, windows and ventilators should be provided in the north, northeast and east directions. 11. Roofs, if provided should have slopes towards the east, the northeast, and the north directions. 12. The north and the east sides should be provided with open spaces for free air circulation. 13. Lightweight items should be placed in the north and the east directions. While rigid and heavy things should be located in the south and the west. This principle is applicable not only to the entire Vastu, but to individual rooms also. 14. The north, northeast, and east side walls should be decorated preferably with photographic frames or paintings of goddesses and wallpapers with natural scenery, etc. 15. Toilets should be located in the south and the west. 16. The overhead tank should be on the west side. A tank on the north or the east side is also permissible. 17. One should sleep with one’s head pointing towards the west or the south direction. 18. The Pooja room should be planned in such a manner that the back of the goddesses should touch the east side wall, with the person facing the east direction while performing the Pooja. In a wider sense, the human body and mind need special protection from the invisible energy fields like nuclear radiation, thermal radiation and in general, destructive electromagnetic radiation. The immediate benefit of Vastu science lies in the fact that it lays down guidelines which are helpful in designing human dwellings or houses which minimize the stress levels on human body resulting from gravitational, thermal and electromagnetic radiation acting individually or in combination. Vastu science assumes a Vastu to be a living soul (Vastu-purush) with all the associated life-sustaining activities and diseases (vastu doshas). Without understanding the implications of the guidelines elaborated in Vastu science, attempting structure alterations based on some preconceived notions or half-baked knowledge through hearsay can sometimes prove detrimental to the Vastu and its occupants. It is advisable to consult Vastu experts in the field for solving Vastu-related problems. Vastu science attempts to design dwellings which are beneficial to the body and mind of the dwellers. Modern architecture sometimes gets so much obsessed with ideas like economy, life style, function, and efficiency that it almost forgets the inherent psychological needs like peace and tranquility of a human being occupying the structure. Vastu science principles have a wide-ranging usage and there can be applied to the analysis of characteristics of not only human abodes, but of public places, human settlements, etc. For this type of exercise, proper understanding of the subject is a must. Superficial application of Vastu principles only complicates matters and results in inaccurate analysis. |
